Young at heart and cherishing life

Diane’s journey to staying active and connected with family

Diane loves living an active lifestyle. She’s a retired teacher who treasures the time she gets to spend with family and friends. Whether it’s enjoying a walk through her neighborhood, participating in water aerobics sessions, or practicing line dancing during her beautiful stays in Florida, Diane also gives online classes for her community in Florida.

Diane is the fifth in a family of three boys and three girls. She wanted her own children to experience the joy of spending time together. Now that they are adults, her two sons and daughter admire their mother’s willingness to get involved in whatever activity they have planned on the weekends and holidays. Diane is convinced that it is these activities together that have strengthened their family bonds.

In 2014, Diane’s orthopedist concluded from the X-rays of her knees that she no longer had any cartilage. And unfortunately, he didn’t see many viable ways to relieve the pain. It wasn’t until she tried Synvisc® that joint pain relief entered the picture.

So, when her orthopedist told her she had osteoarthritis of the knee, Diane was determined to not let it slow her down. She wasn’t surprised to get this news as her family has a history of osteoarthritis. That, and a combination of years spent on her feet, standing and walking throughout the classroom, her age and being a woman all factored into her diagnosis.

Rather than letting osteoarthritis slow her down, Diane asked her orthopedist what she could do to maintain an active lifestyle. They decided to try Synvisc®, a gel-like fluid derived from hyaluronic acid. He explained that it mimics the elasticity and thickness of joint fluid to treat pain.

Diane says, “In the four years I have been taking Synvisc® annually, I have seen a significant improvement of my osteoarthritis symptoms in my knee, most importantly the joint pain and ability to move more easily.”

True to her fun-loving character, Diane is back to doing the activities that have kept her family connected. When other women who have been slowed down by osteoarthritis ask her how she’s able to continue living an active lifestyle, Diane encourages them to talk to their physician about Synvisc®.

Synvisc® is a temporary synovial fluid replacement or supplement for patients that may be suitable for patients with osteoarthritis, whether the disease is mild or severe.

Important Treatment Considerations

Synvisc® (hylan G-F 20) is for intra-articular injection to treat pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, ankle and shoulder. Synvisc® contains small amounts of avian protein and should not be used in patients with related hypersensitivities. Adverse events involving the injected knee after intra-articular injections of Syncisc® may include: transient pain and/or swelling and/or effusion.

The post-marketing experience has identified the following systemic events to occur rarely with Synvisc® administration: rash, hives, itching, fever, nausea, headache, dizziness, chills, muscle cramps, paresthesia, peripheral edema, malaise, respiratory difficulties, flushing and facial swelling. If venous or lymphatic stasis is present, Synvisc® should not be injected into the knee. Synvisc® should not be used in infected or inflamed knees or in patients having skin diseases or infections in the area of the injection site; it should not be injected intravascularly, extra-articularly or into the synovial tissues and capsule.

Results may vary for each individual.
